    Gianrico Carofiglio(Author)
When Martina accuses her ex-boyfriend - the son of a powerful local judge - of assault and battery, no witnesses can be persuaded to testify on her behalf and one lawyer after another refuses to represent her. Guido Guerrieri knows the case could bring his legal career to a premature and messy end, but he cannot resist the appeal of a hopeless cause. Nor deny his attraction to Sister Claudia, the young woman in charge of the shelter where Martina is living, who shares his love of martial arts and his virulent hatred of injustice.

"Involuntary Witness is a stunner. The trial itself is absorbing but it is the veracity of the setting and the humanity of the lawyer that makes the novel a courtroom drama of such rare quality." Times "A new voice, and one with which I am sure we will soon become familiar is that of Gianrico Carofiglio, an anti-mafia judge whose first crime novel, Involuntary Witness, has been a best seller in Italy and won many prizes. A powerful redemptive novel beautifully translated." Daily Mail "Compelling novel written by a judge, the scourge of local criminals who likes to write books that make his readers cry. An author that has the audacity to reveal both a flawed legal system and debunk the myth of the macho Italian man". Observer "The author occupies a niche similar to that which is filled in America by Erle Stanley Gardner and John Grisham. The genre is flourishing and if Carofiglio, following his fellow practitioners, has endowed his hero with discriminating taste for good food, he has none of their relish for brutality. Violence is kept at arm's length." Times Literary Supplement" --This text refers to the MP3 CD edition.

I love these stories. They are not violent, racy, improbable and do not contain explicit sex scenes, so excuse me if I sound patronising, would not appeal to younger readers. They are well crafted tales about the Italian justice system told by our hero Guerrieri with the Mafia as always hovering in the background. If you like Donna Leon, Gianrico Carfiglio, Nadia Dalbuono et al you will love this. As always there is the food which sounds wonderful. And the characters are so well described, especially the judges, it all adds up to a wonderful read. And they are humorous to boot if someone asked I would say this author is akin to John Mortimer (Rumpole). I have read a lot of English crime series like Peter Robinson and Ian Rankin and of course the Swedish Henning Mankell and am now so glad to have found the 'Italians'. So if you want to get away from the horrific books with gore, serial killers, lengthy police procedures etc these books are for you.
